About tournament

This year our spring fecht will be non-traditional and experimental. The differences from previous years will be the following:

Nylon triathlon

The competition will be in a so-called nylon triathlon:

  • at the start of a bout, both fencers start with a one-handed nylon sword
  • once one fencer gets a certain number of points (3 in the pools, 5 in the elimination, but we may change this parameter still), their opponent picks up a buckler
  • when a fencer gets double that amount of points, their opponent switches the sword and buckler for a longsword
  • a bout is won by the fencer who first gets triple that amount of points, or who has more points when time runs out.

Weapons will be provided by us, the organisers.

Because of the nylon weapons, protective gear requirements will be lower than usual:

  • 350N mask is enough, but we will still require a back-of-head protection
  • the fencing jacket does not have to be rated, just sturdy enough (historical gambesons will be acceptable, for example), but we will still require rigid protectors for elbows and forearms
  • Red Dragon/lacrosse/ice hockey style of gloves (or better) will be enough
  • no special thigh protection will be required, it will just have to be covered with something (although we recommend proper HEMA pants), but rigid knee and shin protectors will still be required

Afterblow

Unlike in most of other tournaments in Czechia, we will evaluate afterblow, but without weighted hit zones. The scoring will be as follows:

  • clean hit is rewarded by 2 points
  • double-hit is rewarded by 1 point to each fencer; double-hit occurs, when the two hits from the two fencers land simultaneously, or if the attack movement of the weapon of the second hit has been initiated before the first hit landed
  • in case of afterblow, the first hit before the afterblow is rewarded by 1 point; afterblow is a hit that lands after the first hit, if the attack movement of the weapon of the second hit has been initiated after the first hit landed, but without any action (e.g. a step, retraction of the weapon) or hesitation in between

Double-elimination

The elimination phase of the tournament will not be a classic single-elimination, but rather a double-elimination. This means that even if you lose once, you are still in the game for the first place, and drop out only when you lose the second time.

Video-challenges

If we manage to set it up technically, we want to enable fencers and spectators to see the replay in case of a video-challenge on a screen rather than only for the referees on the recording device. However, we cannot promise this at this point.
